A tale as old as time: how do I get to rank higher on Google? If you’re a wedding photographer you know the market is super saturated so being ranked higher for your keywords is so important! You probably are super good at wedding photography, but not so great at the ranking part. You’re no web or SEO guru! I get it.
Here are a few key tips for getting your wedding photography business to rank higher on Google:
- Know your keywords: Keywords are the words people are actively searching for on Google. Do you know what people search for when looking for you? What do you WANT them to search? If you are a wedding photographer you are most likely location based and including your location in your keywords is key. For example, Louisville Kentucky wedding photographer.
- Make a list of all the keywords/phrases you want to rank for: Once you know you base key phrase, make a list of variations. Using the example above here are some variations:
- Louisville wedding photography
- Louisville KY wedding photographer
- Kentucky wedding photography
- wedding photographer in Louisville
- Incorporate your keywords into your website content: In Showit, the website platform I use, you can create text tags on your site which tell Google the different types of text on your website. You’ll want to create an h1 text tag with your top SEO keywords and put it somewhere towards the top of each page on your site. Make sure you only have one h1 text tag per page.
- Add different variations of your keywords into your SEO page titles and meta descriptions: Showit allows you to create an SEO page title and description for every page on your website. Don’t use the same one for every page. Mix it up with your list you made!
- Make sure you have at least 300 words per page: Google likes to make sure you have enough relevant content on each page of your site. Use a word count tool to make sure you have enough!
- Use Google Search Console to track your rankings: Google Search Console is a free SEO ranking tool related to Google Analytics. It allows you to see what people are typing into Google to find you and where you currently rank for it. You first need to setup an Analytics account to get Search Console. There are other paid tools you can use, but Google Search Console is a good starting point!
- Submit a site map: A site map is an outline of your website that Google uses to guide people to relevant searches. If you have a Showit website you can easily upload TWO site maps: one for your main site and one for your blog. You upload your site maps in Search Console and use these urls:
- Main site sitemap: http://yourdomain.com/sitemap_index.xml (replace “yourdomain” with your domain)
- Blog sitemap: https://yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml (replace “yourdomain” with your domain)
