As small creative businesses, we all want to rank #1 on Google for certain keywords, but how do we get that to happen?

Keywords are the words people use when Googling to find you

When choosing your keywords there are a few questions to ask yourself:

  • What do you want someone to type in Google to find you? It’s not rocket science. What makes sense? If you live in Tampa, Florida and do interior design choosing to focus on “Tampa Florida interior designer” makes sense! Don’t overthink it.
  • Are you location based? Another thing to consider is whether your business is location-based. In the above example, the location is Tampa, Florida. If you exclusively target broader keywords such as “Florida interior designer” or “interior designer,” your reach extends significantly, but you might miss out on connecting with local clients. If your services are location-specific, most potential clients are likely to include their city or region in their search queries. Therefore, aligning your keywords with your specific location, such as “Tampa Florida interior designer,” enhances the likelihood of attracting local clientele.
  • What keywords are people actually using to find me right now? Google Search Console is a powerful tool once you have Google Analytics installed on your site. It allows you to know what words people type in to find you and what you currently rank for those words. By analyzing the data from these tools, you gain valuable information about the terms that lead visitors to your site and how your site ranks for those keywords. Google Search Console, when integrated with Google Analytics, is a valuable tool for understanding how people discover your website and what keywords are driving traffic. By leveraging this information, you can make informed decisions to enhance your site’s visibility and better cater to the needs and interests of your audience.

 

Ultimately, the choice of keywords plays a pivotal role in determining your online visibility and attracting the right audience. Striking a balance between relevance and specificity is key, ensuring that your content aligns with what potential clients are likely to type into the search engine while considering the geographical scope of your services.
